Byosen Reikan Ho – Body Scan

April 21, 2016 by Caithe

Usui taught an energetic scanning technique to assist students intuitively detect areas of imbalance within the body.  Although the correct name for the body scan is Byosen Reikan Ho, most modern-day practitioners refer to it as Byosen.  Becoming proficient in this technique requires practice and patience.

What is Byosen and Hibiki?

Byosen Reikan translates as the ‘energy sensation of sickness (imbalance/disease)’. “Byo” means disease or sickness; “Sen” means before or future; “Rei” means energy, soul, spirit; and “kan” means emotion, feeling, sensation.

During the body scan, you may feel differences or changes in a client’s energy (or your own) as your hands are within their auric field.  These sensations are referred to as hibiki in Japan.  The word means echo or resonance.  When performing Byosen, please remember that although the hibiki are felt in one area of a person’s body, it may not mean that dis-ease will manifest at the same point.  Therefore, hibiki does not encourage you to diagnose a person.  Rather, it helps you recognised where the Reiki is flowing the most.  It encourages your intuitive sensing.

Byosen Technique

Ideally, this technique is completed when your client is lying down.

Begin with Gasshô and Reiji-Ho.

Starting at the crown, hold your hands about 5 to 30 cm above their body.

In a slow sweeping motion, move your hands from the crown to the feet and back up.

It may take a few passes.

  • Your hands may detect sensations of heat or cold.
  • You may feel a spinning sensation under your hands – fast, slow, chaotic, etc.
  • You may feel your hands wanting to remain longer over a particular area.
  • You may feel an abundance of energy or a lack of energy.
  • You may see, feel, smell, or simply know – each person will experience the hibiki in different ways.

Hibiki – common significances

Please note: the intensity of the stimulus perceived can often reflect the severity/depth of the problem:

  • Attraction signifies a need for treatment at the area of pull
  • Repulsion indicates a probable long-standing blockage or inhibition of energy flow – something which may take a considerable number of Reiki sessions to alleviate
  • Pain often indicates an excess or build-up of energy in the given area (due to a blockage, etc.). Sharp pain is sometimes considered to be a sign that the ‘pressure’ in the given area is causing a negative effect elsewhere in the system
  • Tingling frequently signifies an area of inflammation
  • Heat sensations in the therapist’s hands are indicative of Reiki being ‘drawn’ by the client
  • Coldness signifies a deficit of energy in the area (or at least a suppression of energy) – due to a blockage, etc.
  • Flux/Flow indicates a positive, balanced state – which will nonetheless still benefit from receiving treatment. (Deacon, 2003)

This scanning technique is not a tool for diagnosis.  It is simply an additional (and optional) technique to assist you in understanding your energy-sensing capabilities.

Grounding Techniques for Reiki and Spiritual Growth

April 19, 2016 by Caithe

Although grounding techniques are not traditionally taught during Reiki classes, I feel it is a necessary component of spiritual practice and development. Why is that, you may ask? Grounding refers to being present in this moment of time.  When you are ungrounded, you may be worrying about the future or living in the past.  Basically, grounding balances out the spiritual, emotional and physical energy in your body by connecting you with the Earth.  This occurs through your Hara Tanden.  Grounding allows you to have a firm foundation for heightened spiritual awareness.

Being ungrounded can feel like:

  • Light-headedness
  • Tiredness
  • Disassociation or disconnection
  • Being dazed or unable to focus your vision
  • Shakiness
  • Or feeling like your head or your whole body is floating.

When you are ungrounded, you will pick up thoughts and feelings from your surroundings that do not belong to you. You will feel off balance and your energy may feel like anxiety.  This is challenging for people who are going through a spiritual awakening.

Before commencing Reiki (or your everyday living), whether it be for yourself or for others, it is important to be grounded.  Without grounding, the clarity of your Reiki channel may be impaired.  Grounded Reiki practitioners grow in their awareness of what is possible with Reiki.

Grounding Techniques

To focus the mind and express a clear intention, a simple breathing technique may be used.  Three deep breaths that fill and expand the diaphragm are suitable.  Slowly, take each breath and hold it for the count of five then release.

Other grounding techniques include:

  • Tapping your feet on the ground
  • Drinking a glass of water
  • Gentling pulling on another person’s legs
  • Placing a cooling cloth on your forehead
  • Holding another person, object or stuffed animal
  • Focussing on someone’s voice or noises or visuals around you
  • Walking or crossing your arms or fingers – focussing on the movement
  • Holding a crystal known for its grounding abilities such as obsidian, jasper or Australian agate
  • Eating – follow what your body is searching for. This may be chocolate!

Grounding visualisation

If you believe that you require further grounding, a short visualisation may be used.  I have included the meditation/visualisation that I use personally.  This may take as short or as long a time as you feel is required.

First thank Source for their guidance and support. Imagine that you are in an amazing field/forest/jungle/meadow and see yourself as a tree – tall and strong.  Your feet are placed firmly on the ground and from the soles of your feet, roots extend into Mother Earth.

You are anchored – safe and secure.  You can feel the warmth of the sun, the whisper of the wind and the sounds of nature around you.  Begin to feel the way that your roots are deep within Mother Earth.

Allow yourself to draw energy up through your roots and feel it slowly seep up your legs into your base chakra.  Imagine it settling there, igniting it and making it spin in beautiful colours.  Then allow the energy to move to your sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown chakras – each time allowing the energy to pool, ignite and spin.

Once you have reached your crown chakra, send the energy out into the Universe as a beautiful display of branches, leaves and blossoms.  It is so beautiful and awe-inspiring.  The energy touches Father Sky and cycles back through your chakras into Mother Earth and the cycle begins again.

You may wish to allow this to cycle a few times. Know that this energy is available to you at any time that you need it.

When you feel grounded, thank Source for the gift of intuition and begin to commence the dowsing session.  (Cameron, Dowsing and Divination Level 2, 2010)

Reiki Daily Practice – Celticai Zen Ten

April 14, 2016 by Caithe

Reiki Daily Practice

Reiki Daily Practice can be constructed using any of the techniques learnt in First Degree  and may also include other techniques from other modalities.  Your daily practice is just that – YOURS.

Daily practice ensures your Reiki channel is facilitated at its most functional on a day to day basis.  After all, Reiki is for everyday living!

Celticai’s Reiki Zen Ten

This example contains both traditional and non-traditional Reiki techniques for your Reiki Daily Pratice.

You may like to choose two or three songs which will become your guide as a background for your daily practice.  Alternatively, you can make cards or photographs or a poster to remind you of what comes next.

  • Gasshô
  • Joshin Kokyo-ho – Breathing Ki in and out.
  • Expanding Reiki within and then pushing Reiki out to the space around you and further afield.
  • Kenyoko-ho – dry-bathing method
  • Chakra Push – a non-traditional energising technique where the hands are used at each of the chakra points to push energy away from the body. Alternatively, you may like to complete a Quickie Reiki technique – where the hands are kept for 30 seconds at each point.
  • Ki Shower – reach down to the ground. Imagine that you are scooping up a bucketful of ki and carrying it above your head where you then allow it to tip over your body.  You may like to do this three times.
  • Crystal Charging – holding a crystal in your hands, fill it with Reiki. You may ask the Crystal to send your Reiki wherever it needs to go for you or for others.  Trace the Divinity Symbol over it.
  • Celticai Gokkai Technique – The Five Principles
  • Declaration of intention – Affirmations or Questions
  • Gasshô

Celticai Gokkai Technique

In the standing position, hold your hands in Gasshô. For each line of the Gokkai, breathe in and out with ease.

Just for today, what would it take?

To let go of worry – from Gassho, sweep one arm out, over and back into Gassho

To let go of anger – from Gasshô, sweep the other arm out, over and back into Gassho

To demonstrate integrity – from Gasshô, push both arms out, around and back into Gasshô

To be grateful – hold hands in Gasshô position

To be compassionate – place hands over heart chakra, return to Gasshô position

Just for today, what would it take?

 Declaration of intention

During your Reiki Daily Practice, this is an ideal opportunity for you to energise your intentions for your life and living.

You can use questions or affirmations.

Questions could include:

  • What would it take for my awareness to be conscious and my consciousness to be aware? And for the Reiki to flow through me with joy, ease, fun and flair. Reveal. Release. Reset. Revitalise.

Affirmations could include:

  • I am happy.
  • I am healed.
  • I am strong.
  • I am true to myself.
  • I am love and I am loved.
  • I see beauty within and around me.
