Happy Hogmanay

December 30, 2011 by Caithe

Hogmanay

Trying to find out the meaning of the word “Hogmanay” (hog-min-ay) can cause you to run around in circles and falling down in heap on the floor (much like drinking too much whisky on Hogmanay night!).

Some say that it comes from the Anglo-Saxon Haleg Monath (Holy Month), or the Gaelic Oge maidne (New Morning). Others believe that it comes from the Celtic Hogunnus (new year), or the Flemish-Dutch hoog min dag (great love day). There is also the Old French word Aguillanneuf – referring to both the last day of the year and the gift traditionally given on that day.

Christmas was never very popular as a celebration in Scotland.  Why?  It was believed to be too ‘catholic’ so many Scots waited till their beloved Hogmanay to really live it up!

Whatever the original meaning and purpose, lost in the days of old, the meaning of Hogmanay has always been a celebration of a New Year.  It is interesting that Hogmanay is celebrated as a more modern calendar/solar version when New Year on the Wheel of Life is Samhain!

Anyhoo.. let’s look at a few of the old traditions to welcome in the New Year!

Historical Celebrations

·         an old Scottish traditions was for children to run from door to door on New Year’s Eve asking for presents and shouting, Hogmanay!  The small gifts received were also called Hogmanays.

·         amongst the Scottish regiments, the officers had to wait on the men at special dinners while at the bells, the Old Year is piped out of barrack gates. The sentry then challenges the new escort outside the gates: ‘Who goes there?’ The answer is ‘The New Year, all’s well.’

·         New Year’s Day, women would race to the local well to be the first to ‘get the creaming of the well’.  The first water drawn was said to guarantee marriage within the next year!

·         cleaning the house on 31st December (including taking out the ashes from the fire in the days when coal fires were common).

·         clear all your debts before “the bells” at midnight.

·         welcome friends and strangers, with warm hospitality and of course a kiss to wish everyone a Guid New Year

·         dressing up in the hides of cattle and running around the village being hit by sticks.

·         lighting of bonfires, rolling blazing tar barrels down the hill and tossing torches.

·         Wrapping animal hide around sticks and ignited; the smoke was believed to ward off evil spirits. The smoking stick was also known as a Hogmanay.

·         Singing Auld Lang Syne

An old custom that is still prevalent is one called “First footing” (that is, the “first foot” in the house after midnight). To ensure good luck for the house, the first foot should be male, dark (believed to be a throwback to the Viking days when blond strangers arriving on your doorstep meant trouble) and should bring symbolic coal, shortbread, salt, black bun and whisky. These days, however, whisky and perhaps shortbread are the only items still prevalent (and available).  Families used to hire out their dark-haired relatives for the purposes of First Footing!!!

Here in the Celticai Household, I’ll be spending today cleaning our house, changing bed sheets, emptying ‘old’ food from our cupboards and making sure that there are no unpaid bills lying around!  My husband will be clearing gutters and debris from the garden (also great for the Australian Storm Season Preparation).  We’ll talk about and write down our vision for the upcoming 12 months.

Later in the evening, I’ll light some sage and invite the Angels into our home.  Then we’ll gather with family and friends to welcome in 2012.  Of course, in Australia, this is normally a BBQ and a swim in the pool.  As we get a wee bit older, we tend to watch the Edinburgh Tattoo while enjoying a dram or two of single malt whisky.

May yer blessings oot number the thistles that grow and may troubles avoid ye wherever ye go!

Distance Healing Event on Lughnasadh, 1 February 2011

February 1, 2011 by Caithe

Thank you for your intention and participation in the Distance Healing Event on Lughnasadh, 1 February 2011.

Blessed be this season of Lughnasadh, time of the first harvest,

The bounty of the Grain Goddess and the sacrifice of the King God.

Bless our home, our hearth, and our family that we may know only prosperity, safety, and love.

Thanks be to you, Great Lord and Lady, for the many blessings received that have born fruit for us.

To begin, I ceremonially cleansed my sacred space and prepared it for the Healing Event. Three orange candles were lit. Carnelian, Agate, Amethyst, Quartz Crystal and Herkimer Diamonds were utilised to beautify the space. Blessed water filled the representation of The Cup of Plenty.

I offered my welcome and my thanks to the Great Spirit, The Lord and The Lady, Spirit Guides and Beings of Light. The Guardians were acknowledged, welcomed and celebrated: The space was encircled 9 times as I clapped and sang to raise the energies.

The Guardians of the West (Water) were with us ~ sending cleansing rain during the ceremony. The Guardians of the North sent blessed Earth to stand aground. The Guardians of the East were present ~ sending their cooling breeze. The Guardians of the South sent their strength to the flames in lighting the candles and ceremonial fire.

During this preparation, the Healing Energy of the Universe became phenomenally high ~ I almost had to sit down due to the streaming flow that blessed us all.

I ceremonially presented each of the names on the healing list and offered this supplication ~

Great Spirit, Gods and Goddesses ~ You of Many Names ~ Mother of All, Father of All, please bless these people both seen and unseen who require your healing touch upon their lives. With their permission and highest good for all as intention, I offer their names to you for cleansing, protection, purification and healing. Enrich their lives, their bodies, their minds and their spirits so that each may feel your hand upon them. Thank you for offering us the bounty of your earth and the ability to manifest by thought, word and deed that which we wish to attract into our lives. Thank you Great Spirit and Universal Energy. May these actions harm none.

I then held the names under my healing crystal (named Aristotle) so that I could use him as a tool for conducting the healing energy towards each of the people listed. The flow was strong, clear and cleansed each of the chakra points ~ connecting us to both Earth and Sky, Fire and Water.

Again, I thought that the current so strong that I was almost swept off my feet.

Spirit asks me to remind each of you to be like the ant: prepare and prepare some more, for in the preparation you are enacting; through action, creation occurs. Although the Big Picture may be unknown to you, your everyday actions paint the creation of your future. Act wisely and full of conscious thought. Reflection is important. Take this time offered by the Season of Lughnasadh to create assess and plan for the creation of a new YOU.

The meaning of Ant as a Symbol:
Hardworking and tenacious, the ant symbolises community spirit and participation ~ Working together to achieve something tangible that may be ‘lost’ by only viewing the big picture. To be as the Ant, we enact equality, patience and perseverance.

During this time, you may have or will continue to experience symptoms of detoxification and heightened awareness. These symptoms may include:
• Dizziness
• Feelings of warmth and coolness
• Headache
• Tingling
• Increased contentment
• Messages from your Guides

Thank you again for participating today and I hope that the benefits of the healing event manifest quickly and meaningfully within you.

Namaste

40 Days of Thankfulness

October 15, 2010 by Caithe

I’m undertaking 40 days of thankfulness as part of my personal and spiritual growth.  This means that each day, I am publishing a status update to the Celticai Studio Facebook page with my meditation focus.  I am endeavouring to align this with the Mayan Calendar so it is a true learning journey!  Each statement is a thought that I will uphold during that day.  I am looking forward to the expansion of my awareness and in experiencing the little miracles that occur all around me!  Will you join me?
